A straight knife has one job: a perfectly straight edge, end to end. Frank's grinds planer, jointer, chipper, and granulator knives dead flat across their full length- no waves, no low spots- so your finished surface comes off the machine clean and your knives run balanced.

Nicked or cracked knives
Nicks, Chips and Cracks
Small nicks grind out; that's routine. More serious damage is a judgment call: we'll tell you whether a knife has enough steel left to grind past the damage, or whether it's time to replace it. Cracked knives don't go back in a machine spinning at thousands of RPM — we'll flag them every time.
The process
Ground Flat. Ground True. Ground as a Set
Straight-knife grinding is about flatness and consistency. Each knife is surface-ground along its full length in a single setup — not spot-touched — so the edge is straight and the bevel angle is uniform end to end. Just as important, knives that run together are ground together: matched heights across the set keep your cutterhead balanced, which protects bearings and keeps the finish chatter-free:
