Can a nicked or cracked planer
knife be sharpened?
Nicks, Chips and Cracks
Small nicks grind out; that's routine. More serious damage is a judgment call: we'll tell you whether a knife has enough steel left to grind past the damage, or whether it's time to replace it. Cracked knives don't go back in a machine spinning at thousands of RPM — we'll flag them every time.

Straight-knife grinding is about flatness and consistency. Each knife is surface-ground along its full length in a single setup — not spot-touched — so the edge is straight and the bevel angle is uniform end to end. Just as important, knives that run together are ground together: matched heights across the set keep your cutterhead balanced, which protects bearings and keeps the finish a period:
